A Brief History
Located on the island of Guam and nestled in the village of Mangilao, Adacao Elementary School is one of 26 public elementary schools operating under the Guam Department of Education. The school sits amongst five other elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and one high school that compose the Kåttan District, catering to school-aged children that reside within the villages of Barrigada, Ordot-Chalan Pago, Mangilao, and Mongmong-Toto-Maite. The vicinity in which the school is located consists of a quiet, residential area, encompassed by several small business establishments, yet primarily enveloped by single-dwelling residential housing units. The school services students that currently reside within the Latte Heights, Latte Plantation and Pagat areas.
Adacao Elementary School was designed and constructed by Core Tech International. The Guam Department of Education signed a lease agreement with Core Tech International to utilize the facility on a long-term basis as a means to alleviate overcrowding within two neighboring elementary schools outside of the Kåttan district. The school first opened its doors on August 11, 2009 servicing students from Headstart through fifth grade. To date, the school houses 32 classrooms, one speech/auxiliary room, 3 playgrounds, and one main parking lot. Conveniently, a separate area located at the rear of the school is accessible for bus transportation. No structural changes have been made to the learning institution at this time.
Upon opening its doors in 2009, Adacao Elementary initially adopted the Direct Instruction Program as the sole curriculum. Three years later, the school phased out the Direct Instruction Program and opted to shift toward a standards-based curriculum while adopting the Common Core State Standards and adapting to new teaching and learning strategies. In support of this shift, Adacao Elementary is one of 7 elementary pilot schools selected to address Standards Based Grading and Assessment. This cadre aims to experiment with standards-based grading and the use of common formative assessments, while addressing any challenges and strengths associated with such.
By School Year 2014-2015, our team set out to establish a school-wide intervention to increase student proficiency in writing. The new writing program commenced during the third academic quarter in February of 2015 and is unique to Adacao Elementary School. Fondly known as the Writer’s Window, students continue to take part in daily writing activities for thirty minutes a day focusing on different phases of the writing process. To celebrate student success with this program, all student work is publicly displayed outside of each homeroom class and students had the opportunity to win prizes for being selected as Writer of the Week. The program fosters student involvement, encourages friendly competition, and has demonstrated an increase in student writing proficiency.
That National Elementary Honor Society is also distinctive to Adacao Elementary School. The school was the second out of 26 elementary schools on island to establish a chapter of its own. Since then, other chapters have erected within the Guam Department of Education’s elementary setting. The organization aims to recognize eligible students who demonstrate excellence in the four pillars: leadership, service, scholarship and responsibility.
Mission Statement:
"Adacao Elementary School strives to instill positive, meaningful values that promote success within our home and school community, while encouraging life-long learning and creating productive citizens."
